Unlocking free data for Parley – Wiktionary

Up to now Wiktionary is mainly been used as a look-up dictionary. Unlocking its data in order to be able to use it for vocabulary learning requires some coding and Zdenek Broz from dicts.info wrote a script to extract terminology. He passed it on to Vox Humanitatis for further elaboration and we did our first step with it creating a first version for Parley. Today we are releasing two datasets having as starting language English and Russian translating to many languages.

We are working on a way to get easy releases and allow for single language combination downloads. As soon as this works we will of course let you know.

The best way to learn vocabulary with this data is using the multiple choice training mode Parley offers.

Correctness of data: the data is as correct as provided by Wiktionary. Of course it would be great if you let us know about any issues you find with the data. Also the attribution of classes/lessons still is needed and if you would like to help with that, we would be really happy.

During the coming months many more datasets are planned. Of course we are releasing data step by step in order to be able to follow up eventual notes you send us about what has been released so far. In order to release the whole set at once we would need people who want to care about a specific language combination and their corrections. You are welcome if you would like to help there.
