The UCLA Library seeks applications and nominations for the position of Associate University Librarian for Academic Services (AUL/Academic Services), a key senior administrative position in the UCLA Library. The incumbent reports directly to the University Librarian and works closely with the Deputy University Librarian and four other Associate University Librarians and the Directors of Library Development and Library Communications.
Position Description and Duties
The Associate University Librarian has leadership, management, and policy and planning responsibilities for public and collection services related to faculty and graduate student support in the social sciences and humanities, area studies, special collections, archives, and the Center for Oral History. The AUL is responsible for print acquisitions, interlibrary loan, and document delivery services and for management of daily operations of the Southern Regional Library Facility (SRLF). The AUL has direct supervisory responsibility for several departments and functional areas within the UCLA Library System and works with department heads to develop and carry out strategic directions for the Access Services, Collections, Research & Instructional Services (CRIS), Special Collections, and University Archives departments, located in the Charles E. Young Research Library (humanities and social sciences library); the Richard C. Rudolph East Asian Library; the Center for Oral History Research; and the SRLF. The AUL serves as the primary spokesperson on issues and policies related to public and collection services in the areas of faculty and graduate student support and the humanities and social sciences as well as acquisitions, interlibrary loan, and document delivery on the UCLA campus and within the UC system as well as state, national, and international levels and for ensuring that the UCLA Library actively participates in collaborative programs and services, utilizes up-to-date technologies, is informed of major trends and developments in public services, academic librarianship and higher education, and contributes to the advancement of library services and programs.
Description of Library
Ranked among the top ten research libraries in North America, the UCLA Library system is a campus-wide network of libraries serving programs of study and research in many fields. Its principal components are the Charles E. Young Research Library, the College Library, the Louise Darling Biomedical Library, and several subject libraries. The Young Research Library primarily serves faculty and graduate students in the humanities and social sciences, the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, and the School of Public Policy and Social Research. The College Library in the Powell Library Building has collections and services specially developed to meet the needs of undergraduates. The Biomedical Library serves the needs of the Center for Health Sciences and UCLA Hospital and houses the Pacific Southwest Regional Medical Library, part of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (the PSRML serves Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and the U.S. Pacific Basin region). Several subject libraries in arts, management, music, science and engineering, and East Asian studies meet the needs of students and faculty in a variety of disciplines. The collections of the UCLA Library encompass more than 8 million volumes as well as important collections of archives, audiovisual materials, corporate reports, government publications, manuscripts, maps, microforms, oral history transcripts, photographs, technical reports, and other scholarly resources. Nearly 80,000 serial titles are received regularly. The Library also provides access to a growing collection of digital resources including general reference works, electronic journals, and other full-text titles. At the UC system level, UCLA plays a leadership role in a number of systemwide initiatives including the eScholarship Repository of the University of California (http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/).
Required Qualifications
- American Library Association (ALA) accredited master's degree in Library and Information Science OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience).
- Minimum of ten years of professional library experience in providing and managing library services with evidence of progressively increasing scope of supervisory and management responsibility in a large academic or research institution library and evidence of successful record of leadership.
- Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends in public and information services, collection management, resource sharing, acquisitions, and academic libraries and higher education.
- Broad, in-depth knowledge of and proven administrative experience in an academic library setting, preferably in more than one area of public services (reference and research services, instruction, information literacy, special collections, etc.) and in collection services (collection development and management, special collections, acquisitions, etc.), and resource sharing (interlibrary loan, document delivery, etc.)
- Evidence of competence in strategic planning, introducing and managing change in complex environments, budget planning and allocation, human resources management, and facilities and space planning and management in complex organizations.
- Demonstrated skill in building and sustaining effective interpersonal relations (library staff, campus administrators, faculty and students, off campus faculty and administrators, donors).
- Experience in developing programs, events, activities, and services that inform faculty and students, library staff, and others about library services and that provide for broad discussion and input on library-university activities.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, analytical skills, creative and innovative problem-solving skills, and a strong commitment to service excellence, and creative programming (exhibits, library events, etc.).

Extensive experience in supervising and managing librarians and staff in public services including coaching, motivating, and mentoring of managers and supervisors.

Outstanding written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, superior organizational ability, initiative, and an entrepreneurial approach.
- Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the Web, and library-relevant information technology applications. Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity software.
- Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently and to promote teamwork within the organization.
- Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty and student population.

Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree (subject master's or doctoral) in a relevant discipline and/or record of teaching or scholarship.

Associate Directors are appointed in the Management and Senior Professional (MSP) series and are professional employees employed on 12-month basis. Candidates will have demonstrated skills and abilities in leadership, administration, strategic planning, analysis, innovation, creativity, and flexibility and should possess the ability to view issues from a broad library-wide perspective and to function effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment.
MSP appointees are entitled to appropriate professional leave and earn vacation and sick leave monthly (hours vary based on length of service).
