Famine food and information

I was just trying to find translations for the Latin names in Robert L. Freedmans famine food list (the pages takes quite some time to load since it is long and it is just a buffer application for now) What I noted is that for many plants there is just the Latin name. This helps scientists, but not people. Almost none of them are in Wikipedia, but just in botanical databases at Universities ...

So where is Barcelona???

Today there is the Formula 1 race in Barcelona and talking with my son I mentioned that the race is taking place in Spain ... he answers me "no mom, in Catalunya" ... uhmmm ... 7 years old ...

Dös sitt a Aach gann ... or when irony is not understood

Well this will sound funny to you, but sometimes it is actually not. I always wondered why people often don't grasp the meaning of my expressions. I love to use self-irony or also when talking I very often use it in German, Italian or whatever language I happen to speak. Only very few are able to grasp what is behind the words, well my kids are starting to use the same way to express and I will need to explain them why many simply don't understand.

Play Station 2 games in Neapolitan ???

Today was a very busy day and finally also the kids had some time to play and so they chose a quite new playstation game called "Catz". I looked at them and saw they were using the German version of the game and so I said "ahhh ... you are using German". My son, like always needs to explain mom who according to him does not know enough about playstation games "well this game in its main settings has more languages: German, English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese but no Neapolitan" :-) it was hilarious ...

If grandma knew ... taking up old recipes

Oil lamps ... my first one

I am working on a dictionary right now,
one which deals with Renewable Resources and therefore I am reading
really a lot about that theme and I am wondering how much we are not
told, just because it would make industries earn less money.

Musta - or when a cat decides to adopt you

Well, this is Musta, which is Finnish and means "black". I just talked with Outi to find a name for our new friend. This nice little lady (?) really I did not have the chance to chech this up to now the other day decided that we would make a good adoptive family to her and so she comes along, gets her food, wants to be caressed, comes into the apartment for a short walk and then goes out again.

Priorities

We are having really busy periods and it is getting harder and harder to
follow many projects at the same time. Then you have the situation that
some people in some places seem to have simply too much time and want to
discuss endless discussions, because they have time but really don't
care about the rest of the world.

At this stage I have to decide what is relevant for the future and where
I am going to invest my time. In some way the decision is easy, because
some projects have enough people caring about them.

How language death leads to intellectual impoverishment

Getting fed up with Trados ...

I already went away from Windows approx. a year ago, but we still have one old Windows computer here. The one I was using for a job, because there Trados was requested. I have one of those old versions and I can work with it only on an old computer, because it has a parallel port dongle - so my laptop would not even be able cope with that bit.
