Native tongues have long gone extinct

Reversing deadspeak: Linguists supported by the National Science Foundation are meeting at the University of Utah next week hoping to lay the groundwork for an international online catalogue of endangered and dying languages.

A story for kids that don't have books

Today I had a verbal fight with my daughter ... she was testing the limits I supposed and I actually was so tired that my personal limits were very low. Now the funny thing is the result ot of that fight.

We've just finished homework. They had to write a story starting with three words they choose. I will write the story below. What was really surprising to me is: she took her time and wrote, compared to her brother a really long story. Now she told me: take the story and give it to children that don't have books, so that they can read it.

Weird behaviour of a website

I have a really weird behaviour of Drupal on the website http://montedigrazia.i-iter.org after having been moved to a different server. Nothing has been changed in the settings or database structure.

Copying the description from a private chat here:

Aubergines with chocolate ... and how you start to know people

That was funny, yesterday I wrote a short article about eggplants on the montedigrazia.it website. Then I published this on facebook and twitter. And I got a really interesting answer by DriveAmalfi giving me some links and further information ...

Virtaal - TM features

I thought about this a bit longer: actually it is not good to immediately send translations to the TM without having the possibility to replace it. When you translate, even in your mother tongue, and even if you know the subject 100% well often, when re-reading one rephrases certaing parts, just to have things "flow nicer". This means that if the translation has already been stored in the TM you have the problem that you need or 1) to overwrite that segment or 2) at least to be able to edit it manually.

Franconian – a language with all too many varieties

I am originally from a little town in Upper Franconia and it's now approx. one and half a year that I have been working on that language. Up to now it was not clear how to properly create dictionary entries, because we do not only have variations from one place to the other, but also from one author to the other.
